During the April uprising Volov organized the resistance and led the rebels against the turks in Strelcha, Klisura, Koprivshtica and the villages around Carlovo and his rifle made the first shot that gave the start to the rebellion. After the uprising was crushed and many bulgarians died in the battles, Volov fled to Romania, determined to continue the fight. Unfortunately he was caught by the turkish military near the river Yantra and he drowned, instead of letting himself being caught, on the 7th of june 1876 without seeing the freedom he dreamed of. But his words "The Russians will come soon to free us" became true.
